G.P. Schmahl ha sido gerente del Santuario Marino Nacional de Flower Garden Banks desde marzo de 1999. Está involucrado en temas de gestión de Áreas Marinas Protegidas, incluida la investigación, la educación y la protección de los recursos. Obtuvo un posgrado en Zoología de la Universidad de Georgia, y siempre ha ocupado cargos relacionados con la investigación marina, la gestión costera, la planificación de recursos y la regulación ambiental.
